What to consider when opening a checking account

We have provided you a list of the best checking rates but when shopping around for a checking account, don’t just focus on getting the best interest rate. Also, consider the account’s features and service fees. We suggest online banks because they tend to require low or even zero minimum deposits.

When looking at checking accounts, look out for fees. Checking accounts are more likely to come with fees than savings accounts. These can include monthly service fees, overdraft fees, overdraft protection fees, the cost of checks and more. Be careful of monthly service fees. Always look for accounts that give you a monthly service fee waiver, otherwise those fees will erode your savings.
