Which savings account do I choose?

The number of savings account options is overwheling, so here are a few tips to help you find the right account.

We suggest you first look for the highest APY available. There’s a good chance that the financial institution with the highest rate is one you don’t recognize, but don’t be afraid to look beyond your usual bank, even though national banks such as Citibank, Bank of America, Chase, and HSBC are more recognizable. Unfortunately, many of the most well-known big bank names are typically the ones offering some of the lowest rates.

Then be sure to consider the account’s minimum balance or minimum deposit requirement. You typically won’t find unreasonably high minimums with online savings accounts, but to earn some of the highest APY, the minimum requirement may be thousands of dollars.

Avoiding fees should be one of the key factors to consider. While some banks offer you high interest rates but it would not make sense to sign up for those only to find the fees negate the higher interest rates.
